Burnaby Central Railway

One of Burnaby’s hidden gems is the Burnaby Central Railway. This trip will be fun for the whole family, especially those youngsters who love trains. For just $3.50 you can ride through the forest on a locomotive in Confederation Park. The most popular at the site are four hand-crafted steam trains that are ⅛ the size of a regular one. There are three propane-burning engines and one that runs on coal.
Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre

Burnaby’s Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre is a not-so-well-known treasure in the city. While many of their events are free, if you wish to delve deeper into the Japanese culture you can sign up for one of their paid programs, many of which are less than $50. They hold tea ceremony classes, calligraphy workshops, as well as classes on mastering the art of the bonsai tree. Visit them online to find class schedules and fees.
Shadbolt Centre for the Arts

Take in a show or unleash your inner artist with one of the many programs offered at Burnaby’s Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. From opera to dances to plays, this is a great place for any artist, or art observer, year round. And best of all, most ticketed events are under $50.
Burnaby Village Museum

For just under $35, you can get an annual membership to the Burnaby Museum. It comes with a variety of perks, including “member only” event invites, free admission to the Haunted Village at Halloween and you’ll never pay for a carousel ride, which usually costs about $3 a pop. And, this museum is not just for old artifacts, it will transport you back in time through its village and townsfolk, reminiscent of Burnaby in the 1920s.
Burnaby Art Gallery

If you pop into the Burnaby Village Museum, you may as well make a trip to the art gallery, located nearby on Deer Lake Avenue. They host a mix of exhibits featuring locals artists and those from beyond. While admission is by donation, you can sign up in advance for one of their many programs, which in the past have included art tours and children’s art classes.

Did you know there are more than 40 farms in Burnaby? Grab a brochure and take a self-guided tour around the city. Pick up some locally grown produce and visit with some farm animals. The tour itself is free, but for $50 you can get your hands on a ton of fresh goodies.
Burnaby Artisan Farmer’s Market

What better place to hold a farmer’s market than in a forest? Held on Saturdays from May to October in the breathtaking Deer Lake Park, this market is a wonderful way to spend a day.
